Chaplain Message – March 2017

Bring on the heat!

I say that with a smirk on my face and a wince in my heart. I know plenty of people around here love the heat, but for me, it results in a sigh and a “I can do this. I can do this.” self-preservation chant. I grew up in coastal Texas, and it was seemingly always hot (and humid). When I grew up, I wanted to move somewhere that had a comfortable temperature. And for four or five months per year, that’s what I accomplished in Phoenix, Arizona. Nevermind the remaining months….

Interesting how dedicated we are to the pursuit of comfort. Don’t believe me? What’s your thermostat on in your house? How about your car? What do you wear about the house? Enjoy putting on make-up or shaving your face (for the appropriate genders, obviously) when you don’t have to? How about financial comfort? Still unconvinced?

I think you get my point. As Americans, we are perhaps predisposed for “comfortable” more than anyone society in history. However, we often seem so very uncomfortable. Like comfort is within reach, maybe, but Just. Not. There. Yet. And that doesn’t make us happy.

I’ve heard it said before that we need to be “comfortably uncomfortable” in our lives. I like that. I don’t think it’s wrong to relish a cool breeze on a Spring day. The problem is when I’m discontent in the current reality. And God is in the middle of our reality, whatever it might be at present. ‘

In Philippians 4, Paul said that he had learned to be thankful in every situation, whether “good” or “bad”. Do we dare to claim the same, or do we even want to be able to do so.

Just some food for thought in the comforts (and lack of which) of the day-at-hand. Praise God, and see him beside you!
